Master's degree

  • Educational Philosophy: "Law and Society" while traditional legal education primarily focuses on the mastery of Positive Law (existing statutes and regulations), the Master of Laws (LL.M.) program at Chiang Mai University adopts a broader, more integrated perspective.

Our curriculum emphasizes the relationship between legal provisions and their actual impact on society. We strive to bridge the gap between Jurisprudence and Social Sciences by incorporating Social Science research methodologies into legal studies. This "Law and Society" approach analyzes legal issues through various lenses, including:
    - Social Conditions: How laws affect and are shaped by social structures.
    - Economic Context: The relationship between legal frameworks and economic development.
    - Interdisciplinary Research: Using empirical data to evaluate the effectiveness of the law.
By shifting from a purely doctrinal study to a Socio-Legal approach, our program prepares scholars to understand law not just as a set of rules, but as a dynamic instrument for social change and justice.

The Master of Laws program is designed to develop legal experts who possess the advanced knowledge and skills required for professional excellence and the ability to apply legal principles to solve complex social issues.
The specific objectives of the curriculum are as follows:

  • Theoretical Application: To equip students with the ability to apply legal theories and interdisciplinary knowledge to analyze both the law and evolving social issues.
  • Professional Ethics: To cultivate high moral standards and professional ethics in the practice of law.
  • Advanced Research Excellence: To develop advanced research skills, enabling students to conduct legal inquiries with depth and breadth while discovering new perspectives and bodies of knowledge within the field.
  • Professional English Proficiency: To ensure students can utilize the English language accurately and effectively as required by the modern global legal profession.
