Origin of the Program

The Faculty of Law, Chiang Mai University, had celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2012, and has planned its progress in the next decade under the framework of the ASEAN Community.  Though small and relatively new compared to those already well-established in Bangkok, the Faculty of Law has prided itself on constantly serving the society through the excellent work of its Alumni and the lecturers.  Based upon that achievement, the Faculty of Law is determined to move forward to regional and international programs – in the establishment of the international program in law.

Mid-2012, Khun Pongpat Riangkruar, Ministerial Public Law Specialist of the Ministry of Justice, realized the Faculty of Law’s potential strength, and introduced the academic collaboration with Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, USA, which is also his alma mater.  Fully cognizant of the world-renowned school of law of Chicago-Kent, Assistant Professor Chatree Rueangdetnarong, Dean, and Kanya Hirunwattanapong, Assistant Dean for Foreign Affairs, decided to go and meet Dean Harold Krent and Assistant Dean Edward Harris in Chicago to discuss the collaboration.  On 17th January 2013, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Dean Harold Krent and Dean Chatree Reuangdetnarong, at Chiang Mai University, from which the Legal Certificate Program was created.

In April 2014, the Program was revised to add a 2 Course Option into the existing structure, and thus we call them collectively as ‘the CMU-CK Program’. The CMU-CK Program thus provides 2 options: a 4 Course Option, and a 2 Course Option.

This program was launched in September 2014 in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand. The Legal Certificate Program is designed to provide the students of the ASEAN Community and said at large an opportunity to obtain an excellent legal education in an economically affordable manner. All courses taught in English. The Program prepares the law students to face the challenges of the 21st Century of the ASEAN Community and the world. All students are encouraged to attend.
